臺灣首廟天壇於3月6日中午11時許，廟方你人員發現廟前廣場之金紙短少67捆(價值新臺幣6萬7,000元)遭竊，急忙派員至臺南市第二分局民權派出所報案。員警受理後立即調閱周邊監視器，逐一檢視過濾人車畫面，鎖定涉案對象並通知到案說明，案經調查後將高姓等3名男子依涉犯竊盜罪嫌移送法辦。

經查，在3月5日凌晨0時18分許，有一輛白色貨車開進廟內廣場，3人下車以徒手方式將廣場金紙搬上車後駕車離去。案經員警鎖定車輛以車追人，4小時立即鎖定涉案對象並通知到案說明，釐清犯案目的動機竟是為了還願而未經廟方同意，逕將金紙載走焚燒祭拜玉皇大帝，案經調查後將高姓等3名男子依涉犯竊盜罪嫌移送法辦。
員警調查，高姓男子(20多歲、台中人)於2年前至天壇發願，如大考順利將焚化金紙感謝玉皇大帝，後來順利考上理想學校，乃於3月4日夜間託請傅姓、樊姓2位同學（均20多歲）一同幫忙，以2,000元租賃貨車1輛開車來臺南，高男以其事前已獲玉皇大帝應允恩准為由，於5日凌晨0時18分將貨車開進天壇廣場，3人以近30分鐘之時間一同將廣場前信眾供奉金紙67捆，未經天壇廟方許可，逕自載走至仁德區某土地公廟的金爐焚化感謝神明庇佑。67捆金紙經員警通知到案時僅焚化剩2捆，調查後依竊盜罪嫌將3人移請臺南地方檢察署偵辦。
